Autumn is one of the most beautiful times of the year to capture family memories. With crisp air, golden leaves, and soft natural lighting, fall provides the perfect backdrop for stunning family photos. Here are some tips to make your fall family photos truly unforgettable.
Choose the right fall location
Look for a scenic location that highlights the beauty of fall. Parks, forests, apple orchards, and pumpkin patches offer vibrant colors and seasonal charm. If you prefer a more personal touch, consider your backyard or a nearby hiking trail for a cozy and familiar setting. These photos were taken at American Fork Amphitheater. I love this location because it is easy accessible, has lots of places to explore and play and the colors last longer in the valley. These were taken in mid-November.
Coordinate outfits without matching too much

Opt for a color palette inspired by autumn—warm earth tones like mustard yellow, burgundy, olive green, and burnt orange. Avoid overly bright colors or busy patterns that might distract from the natural scenery. Layers, cozy sweaters, and scarves add texture and warmth to your photos. Choose the right time for your fall family photos
The best lighting for fall photos is during the golden hour—shortly after sunrise or just before sunset. The soft, warm glow enhances the colors and creates a magical atmosphere. Overcast days also work well by providing even lighting without harsh shadows. I love this time for young families because the sun is setting earlier, making peak picture taking time a little earlier to accommodate earlier bedtimes.
Incorporate fun fall props

Adding seasonal props like pumpkins, blankets, or a basket of apples can create a playful and authentic feel. Let the kids toss leaves in the air or cuddle under a blanket for natural, candid moments. This sweet mama brought hot chocolate, blankets, earmuffs and hats to keep the family warm + add interest to the photos.
Capture Candid Moments in your Fall Family Photo Session
Some of the best family photos happen in between the poses. Laugh, play, and enjoy the moment together. Genuine smiles and interactions bring warmth and personality to your images.
With a little planning and creativity, your fall family photos will become cherished memories for years to come!
