Why is fall a great time for an extended family session?

Gather all generations under the autumn trees for timeless fall extended family photos that you will cherish for years to come. Fall is one of the busiest times for family photographers. The leaves in the mountains are changing color + the weather is perfectly crisp. If your family is getting together for Thanksgiving, an extended family session might be right for you! This is a great way for everybody to get updated pictures in time for the Christmas holidays. And you know grandma is going to love updating her walls with recent family photos. Where should we take our fall extended family photos?

There are a few things to remember when booking a location for fall extended family photos. First, how far does every family member have to drive? Be especially mindful of the families with the youngest children. Let’s do our best to make sure that the littlest family members arrive to the session the happiest. I would suggest staying within 20-40 minute drive for all family members.

Another great idea is to book fall extended family photos in your backyard. Do grandma and grandpa have a beautiful tree in the backyard? Do they have a front porch everybody loves? Having a familiar location can make everyone more comfortable. Another benefit is that you have a place for grandkids to use the bathroom and take a break when they need it. It’s a win-win!

When should we book our session?

When choosing a date for fall extended family photos, remember that dates in peak fall colors book out the soonest. In the Utah canyons, peak fall colors usually happen mid-September to early October. These dates are my most popular and book up the quickest. I would reach out to your favorite family photographer in mid-summer to ensure you get the date + time you’re looking for. Don’t wait until you see leaves changing in the valley to think of family photos.
